Jan 15 | Jessica Biel’s mountain tears
Jessica Biel broke down in tears upon reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The actress – who reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro’s 19,340-foot summit on Tuesday night (January 12) – was so emotional about completing the challenge for the Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro campaign that she had to be consoled by UN Foundation executive Elizabeth Gore. Speaking via satellite phone, Elizabeth said: “I walked over to Jessie and gave her a big hug. The two of us embraced and we just cried. Every single one of us was in absolute tears.” The 27-year-old star – who climbed the mountain with a team of celebrities, including actor Emile Hirsch and rapper Lupe Fiasco in order to raise awareness of the global water crisis – endured “zero temperatures” and “altitude sickness” on the gruelling trek. Elizabeth told People magazine said: “We had a complete whiteout. There was so much snow, we could only see two or three feet in front of us. So we had to line up like a chain to make it to the final point. I’m so proud that every single one of us 12 climbers made it. “The temperature was zero degrees and so many people were struggling. People had hurt limbs, people had altitude sickness.” Finally, after eight days of hiking, the group reached the town of Arusha in Tanzania on January 13. Jessica will now join Elizabeth on a trip to a United Nations camp in Ethiopia to see some of the world’s most significant water problems.
Jan 09 | Biel & Hirsch get climbing
Jessica Biel and Into the wild star Emile Hirsch have begun their charity climb up Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro – to raise cash and awareness about the world’s chronic water shortage. The two movie stars have been joined by actress Isabel Lucas and pop stars Santi White, Lupe Fiasco and Kenna on the trek to the top of the 19,340-foot peak. The star-studded group began the climb on Thursday (January 07) and are using the latest social networking technology to update fans and followers along the way. They’ll be posting posting clips, photos and ‘tweets’ on the Summit on the Summit website.
Jan 06 | Biel’s life-changing visit to Africa
Jessica Biel made a secret visit to Tanzania earlier this month to see first-hand how her week-long charity trek up Mount Kilimanjaro will benefit poverty-stricken locals. The actress will begin her 19,341-foot (5,895-metre) climb up the African peak on Thursday (January 07) to fundraise and highlight the need for clean drinking water in less economically developed countries. But before the star begins the trek, she visited the African country to see how the money raised from the climb will be spent. Biel says, “Meeting the people and community in Tanzania… has been an invaluable and eye-opening experience for me. “My hope is that others will be inspired to find ways that they can help; starting simply in their homes and continuing to other parts of the world. We are all in this together.”
Nov 07 | Biel open for ‘7th Heaven’ reunion!
Back in the day there was a little show on called 7th Heaven that aired weekly on the WB. It followed the usually clean-cut exploits of the very large Camden family, headed up by their minister father. And, it was the show that launched the career of a girl you might know: Jessica Biel. On the series, which made its debut in 1996 before calling it quits in 2007, Jessica played the oldest daughter, Mary Camden. She left the show in 2006 around the same time as her TV brother, Barry Watson. The reason: contract disputes. But now it seems three years later, after the dust has settled in Glen Oak, the actress would be more than happy to grace the small screen (or even the big one!) for a little 7th Heaven reunion. “I don’t know. I haven’t really been talked to about that in a really long time. It’s always possible. Yeah I’d be open to that,” she told MTV News, adding that she couldn’t think of any ideas for a plot for a reunion special. “I have no idea! My character has gone through so many different story lines,” she said. “Who knows? I don’t even remember where we left her last or what her life was like so I don’t know.” Source: MTV News
Oct 11 | Biel and Wentz team up for good cause
Pete Wentz has joined Jessica Biel in her charitable mission to draw attention to the Third World’s water crisis. The stars showed up to speak at the Live Earth press conference in New York on Tuesday (October 13), where they both addressed the need for clean drinking water in third world countries. The actress, who is preparing to scale Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for the cause, admitted she hadn’t realised that millions of people around the globe have no access to drinkable water. She told reporters, “For most of my life, water has been an ordinary part of an ordinary day. Turn on the faucet, get in the shower, wash your clothes. It is always there; it is always accessible. I’ve never been forced to think about where it comes from. “I won’t stand up and tell you that learning more has made me the brilliant creator of solutions; I am not. But I am listening. And I am changing the way that I live. This isn’t a problem for them or for those – this is a problem for us and for we.” The Fall Out Boy bassist added that he has become increasingly concerned for children’s health since becoming a father. He added, “It’s mind-blowing to me that every day 5,000 kids die because they’re drinking water that’s unsafe. These are regular kids, just like my son, who have to walk miles each day to get water and the water you get may not be safe or clean. If I had to give my little guy a glass of water – well, he doesn’t drink a lot of water – but if I had to give my little guy a glass of water knowing that it would make him sick, it would totally freak me out.”
Sep 20 | Charity climber Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The Illusionist actress is joining a group of celebrity climbers, including actress Isabel Lucas and singers Lupe Fiasco and Kenna, for the Summit on the Summit expedition in January. The trek hopes to raise awareness about the need for clean water worldwide. Speaking about the trip, Jessica said: “This is a basic human necessity that needs to be addressed now. I want to help any way I can in order to raise awareness toward the life-threatening clean water crisis happening not only in Africa but around the world.” Jessica’s boyfriend, SexyBack star Justin Timberlake, previously stated he was planning to join in the climb, which will also raise money for the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and PlayPumps International. He said: “I’ve been training four times a week to get my VO2 – oxygen consumption – levels up to expand my lungs. We’ll climb for a week straight, carrying 30lbs on our backs. It’s going to be intense, but it’s going to be so rewarding. We’re going to be ready for it.” The climb to the 19,000 ft summit of the African mountain was organised by Kenna, whose father suffered from waterborne diseases growing up in Ethiopia. He said: “We wanted to make sure there was a way people knew this was an issue and a way for them to do something about it. This is a global issue. It’s not an Africa problem. It’s not a South America problem. It’s a world, global problem. In America, 11 million people go without water.”
